Imagine this… you are 13 years old and sitting in your new 2nd grade class watching your teacher write the lesson on the chalkboard. When she finishes, you pull out your small, tattered notebook and begin to copy what you see. But you can’t actually read the words you are trying to write.
This is the reality for Richard, a new student in one of our partner schools. Having just moved from a village to the capital city, he can’t read. And because of that, he faces numerous challenges in school which will continue to haunt him long into his future.
Richard is embarrassed about his situation, but he’s determined to learn. And if given the opportunity, we know that he can!
He says, “I want to know how to read and become a teacher someday so that I can help other kids learn how to read. Then when I’m working, I can build my mom and siblings our own house.”
