In a community where resources are scarce and mentorship often absent, our relational approach plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our students and teachers. Through our mentorship, we provide more than just technical advice and instruction; we create a supportive relationship that helps individuals navigate challenges, build self-confidence, and develop essential life skills. The relationships that we form promote trust and inspire personal growth.
Two years ago, our Education Team Leader, Chibwe, started mentoring Kondwani, a teacher from Good Shepherd. The purpose of the mentorship was to equip Kondwani to effectively engage his students in the classroom and gain confidence in the process. Their interactions involved Chibwe observing his lessons and providing constructive feedback. What began as a regular weekly mentoring session evolved into a genuine friendship with mutual respect.
Kondwani explains, “If our relationship was solely based on work, it would have faced many challenges along the way.”
As the two continued to meet regularly, their conversations began to include more than just classroom matters; they began to discuss personal issues as well. Now when they meet, they spend time praying for one another and offering advice to each other - never missing an opportunity to learn from one other.
When asked about mentoring Kondwani, Chibwe said, “Kondwani values his students and pays attention to their learning needs. He treats his students like family, which is why they don’t miss class.”
The support that Kondwani is receiving through the mentorship program has ultimately extended to his students, where he is strategically investing in each child according to his/her needs and interests. Kondwani’s dream is to see his students succeed and be able to contribute meaningfully to society, and he is giving his all to make that happen.
“The success of a teacher is in the learners,” says Kondwani. Not only is this true for Kondwani’s students, but also for all of the teachers we are mentoring. It’s our greatest joy to see them succeed in raising up the next generation.
