Every Wednesday by 7:30 AM, a small crowd of kids gathers outside the library gate, excitement shining in their eyes. Some press their faces between the slats, trying to peek inside, hoping to catch a glimpse of what’s in store. Our themed community days expose the children to interactive lessons ranging from science to technology to music and more. This month, we featured a local artist, Hugh, who used his gifts to help the children discover theirs.
Years Later!
Alex is a very jovial 19-year-old boy who lives next to Impact One. Despite attending public school, by 6th grade, Alex still could not read or write. With no books to use, it became a constant struggle to keep up with school. When he started middle school, he began regular self-study with a Bible, the only book available to him at home. Even though he didn’t understand most of the words, he would use it to practice spelling.
Reflections from a Volunteer
Over the past month, Cynthia, a student from the University of Zambia who is currently studying literacy and languages, has been interning with us. She has helped us create educational resources for our teachers, developed new literacy resources for higher level readers, and conducted many of our annual reading assessments. When reflecting back on her time with us, this is what Cynthia had to say.
“Impact One Initiative is indeed transforming lives through the power of education. As I have come to witness, this is definitely coming to fruition; one school, one teacher and one child at a time.
