Discovering Talents on Community Day

Every Wednesday by 7:30 AM, a small crowd of kids gathers outside the library gate, excitement shining in their eyes. Some press their faces between the slats, trying to peek inside, hoping to catch a glimpse of what’s in store. At exactly 9:00 AM, the gate swings open, and they rush in, eager for the day's adventure. This is Community Day—a day every child in Ng’ombe looks forward to each week.

While reading is at the heart of what we do, we go beyond books to keep learning exciting. Every third Wednesday of the month, we host a themed Community Day, featuring activities ranging from science and technology to art, games, poetry, and music, giving kids experiences they might not otherwise have.

One of the most memorable activities this month was an art session led by a local artist named Hugh. His visit brought joy and excitement as he guided the children through a creative session. Encouraging them to use their imagination, he watched as they took on the challenge with enthusiasm. Their drawings reflected their thoughts and surroundings - families, cars, people, and animals. But beyond the fun, the session provided a space for self-expression in a way that felt natural and meaningful.

During the session, Hugh noticed a remarkable talent in a boy named Webster. While many children sketched familiar scenes, Webster’s approach was different. He created a detailed sunset, showing an unusual level of skill and intention. His work stood out, and even Hugh was impressed.

For Hugh, this day wasn’t just about teaching art it was about helping children see the value in their creativity. Growing up, he had a passion for drawing but lacked the resources and mentorship to nurture his talent. Over time, he set art aside, but later in life, he realized how powerful his gift was in telling stories that people could connect with. Now, he is determined to help young artists explore their potential

"When I was younger, I didn’t have the resources or mentors to guide me. I want to give these kids the opportunities I never had," Hugh shared.

We are grateful for volunteers who invest their time in children’s growth. Their support is making a difference, helping kids like Webster discover their talents, nurture their skills, and see new possibilities for their future.
