After years of attending school, the door to reading has finally been unlocked for Helen. Despite attending class on a regular basis, she struggled to grasp what was being taught, and she was too shy to approach the teacher to ask for help. So year after year, she went through the motions without ever learning how to read fluently. And as the years passed, it became more and more embarrassing for her to see how far behind she was falling.
But her 6th grade teacher changed it all.
Helen says, “She paid attention to me.”
Having been trained by Impact One, Teacher Misozi introduced effective literacy lessons and a daily reading time at 3pm. But it wasn’t just the methods that made the difference. It was the relationship she developed with her students.
Helen recognized that her new teacher was easy to talk to and she no longer felt shy to ask questions when she didn’t understand.
This careful attention and implementation of good methods has changed Helen’s life. For years, she was stuck at a 1st grade reading level, only able to form short three and four letter words. But during this year’s reading assessment, she jumped three levels to be able to read and comprehend short stories. She is so proud that she’s now able to read books to her younger brother. A beautiful example of the ripple effect that education has, and the opportunities that are now available not only to Helen, but also the rest of her family.
The story of Helen reminds us that teachers are world changers. They speak into the lives of our children and help prepare them for a brighter future - impacting not only one life, but the entire family. This is why we equip teachers with the methods they need to make a bigger impact. When you impact one, you impact a generation.
